An Open Letter To Russell Simmons On The State Of The Music Industry.

Let me begin by thanking Mr. Simmons for bringing to the forefront a topic that has plagued me and several other ex-Def Jam and current employees. The business of music has been hip-hop’s worst enemy. Driven by pressure to meet profitability by music industry conglomerates and a lack of a talent incubator system, urban record executives are making talent decisions based on BDS spins and misguided gauges of popularity.

My next issue is the leak in the current management pipeline. While other business models invite entrepreneurship and internal promotion, what current young talented executives are faced with is a brick wall of bureaucracy. The creativity of your accomplishments is a testimony to youth, energy and determination. Hip-Hop is faced with a crisis in the front office but hip-hop has always found a way to survive and it will.

The solution is one that is born from observations over the past 3 years. The lack of direct investment in a new organization from hip-hop executives is driving the “anti-industry” sentiment. I applaud the accomplishments of independent labels such as Swishahouse who through radio relationships are able to sell, however in hip-hop’s birth place New York City; independent artists find it more difficult to survive.

I invite you and other landmark record executives to invest in a new record label capable of taking calculated talent risks and shedding the weight of corporate interest & scrutiny. I thank you for creating dynamic organizations such as Def Jam and hope your dismay will inspire a new era in urban recording music. Hip-hop artists and cultural will not be saved by the music industry it will be saved by us.
